Artikel des Tages: Paramagnetic Metal Complexes as Water Proton Relaxation Agents for NMR Imaging: Theory and Design

Artikel des Tages: Visualization of Inert Gas Wash-Out During High- Frequency Oscillatory Ventilation Using Fluorine-19 MRI

High-frequency oscillatory ventilation is looked upon as a lung-protective ventilation strategy. For a further clarification of the physical processes promoting gas transport, a visualization of gas flow and the distribution of ventilation are of considerable interest. Therefore, fluorine-19 magnetic resonance imaging of the imaging gas octafluorocyclobutane (C4F8) during high-frequency oscillatory ventilation was performed in five healthy pigs. For that, a mutually compatible ventilation-imaging system was set up and transverse images were acquired every 5 sec using FLASH sequences on a 1.5 T scanner. Despite a drop in signal-to-noise ratio after the onset of high-frequency oscillatory ventilation, for each pig, the four experiments could be analyzed. A mean wash-out time (t) at 5 Hz of 52.7 6 18 sec and 125.9 6 39 sec at 10 Hz, respectively, were found for regions of interest including the whole lung.
This is in agreement with the clinical findings, in that washout of respiratory gases is significantly prolonged for increased high-frequency oscillatory ventilation frequencies.
Our study could be a good starting-point for a further optimization of high-frequency oscillatory ventilation.

Artikel des Tages: A dynamic elastic model for segmentation and tracking of the heart in MR image sequences

Strong prior models are a prerequisite for reliable spatio-temporal cardiac image analysis. While several cardiac models have been presented in the past, many of them are either too complex for their parameters to be estimated on the sole basis of MR Images, or overly simplified. In this paper, we present a novel dynamic model, based on the equation of dynamics for elastic materials and on Fourier filtering. The explicit use of dynamics allows us to enforce periodicity and temporal smoothness constraints. We propose an algorithm to solve the continuous dynamical problem associated to numerically adapting the model to the image sequence. Using a simple 1D example, we show how temporal filtering can help removing noise while ensuring the periodicity and smoothness of solutions. The proposed dynamic model is quantitatively evaluated on a database of 15 patients which shows its performance and limitations. Also, the ability of the model to capture cardiac motion is demonstrated on synthetic cardiac sequences. Moreover, existence, uniqueness of the solution and numerical convergence of the algorithm can be demonstrated.

Artikel des Tages: Measurement of Apparent Cell Radii Using a Multiple Wave Vector Diffusion Experiment

It had been previously shown that an idealized version of the two-wave-vector extension of the NMR pulsed-field-gradient spin echo diffusion experiment can be used to determine the apparent radius of geometries with restricted diffusion. In the present work, the feasibility of the experiment was demonstrated in an NMR imaging experiment, in which the apparent radius of axons in white matter tissue was determined. Moreover, numerical simulations have been carried out to determine the reliability of the results. For small diffusion times, the radius is systematically underestimated. Larger gradient area, finite length gradient pulses, and a statistical distribution of radii within a voxel all have a minor influence on the estimated radius.

Artikel des Tages: High resolution lung airway cast segmentation with proper topology suitable for computational fluid dynamic simulations

Developing detailed lung airway models is an important step towards understanding the respiratory system. While modern imaging and airway casting approaches have dramatically improved the potential detail of such models, challenges have arisen in image processing as the demand for greater detail pushes the image processing approaches to their limits. Airway segmentations with proper topology have neither loops nor invalid voxel-to-voxel connections. Here we describe a new technique for segmenting airways with proper topology and apply the approach to an image volume generated by magnetic resonance imaging of a silicone cast created from an excised monkey lung.

Steady-state diffusion-weighted imaging: theory, acquisition and analysis

Die Autorinnen Jennifer A. McNab und Karla L. Miller vom Centre for Functional MRI of the Brain (FMRIB) der Universität Oxford schreiben im Abstract:
Steady-state diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) has long been recognized to offer potential benefits over conventional spin-echo methods. This family of pulse sequences is highly efficient and compatible with three-dimensional acquisitions, which could enable high-resolution, low-distortion images. However, the same properties that lead to its efficiency make steady-state imaging highly susceptible to motion and create a complicated signal with dependence on T1, T2 and flip angle. Recent developments in gradient hardware, motion-mitigation techniques and signal analysis offer potential solutions to these problems, reviving interest in steady-state DWI. This review offers a description of steady-state DWI signal formation and provides an overview of the current methods for steady-state DWI acquisition
and analysis.

Diffusion-Weighted MRI for Monitoring Tumor Response to Photodynamic Therapy

Purpose:
To examine diffusion-weighted MRI (DW-MRI) for assessing the early tumor response to photodynamic therapy (PDT).

Materials and Methods:
Subcutaneous tumor xenografts of human prostate cancer cells (CWR22) were initiated in athymic nude mice. A second-generation photosensitizer, Pc 4, was delivered to each animal by a tail vein injection 48 h before laser illumination. A dedicated high-field (9.4 Tesla) small animal MR scanner was used to acquire diffusion-weighted MR images pre-PDT and 24 h after the treatment. DW-MRI and apparent diffusion coefficients (ADC) were analyzed for 24 treated and 5 control mice with photosensitizer only or laser light only. Tumor size, prostate specific antigen (PSA) level, and tumor histology were obtained at different time points to examine the treatment effect.

Results:
Treated mice showed significant tumor size shrinkage and decrease of PSA level within 7 days after the treatment. The average ADC of the 24 treated tumors increased 24 h after PDT (P < 0.001) comparing with pre-PDT. The average ADC was 0.511 ± 0.119 × 10−3 mm2/s pre-PDT and 0.754 ± 0.181 × 10−3 mm2/s 24 h after the PDT. There is no significant difference in ADC values pre-PDT and 24 h after PDT in the control tumors (P = 0.20).

Conclusion:
The change of tumor ADC values measured by DW-MRI may provide a noninvasive imaging marker for monitoring tumor response to Pc 4-PDT as early as 24 h.

Artikel des Tages: Feasibility of FAIR Imaging for Evaluating Tumor Perfusion

(Carrier-Concentration Dependence of the Pseudogap Ground State of Superconducting Bi2Sr2-xLaxCuO6+δ Revealed by 63,65Cu-Nuclear Magnetic Resonance in Very High Magnetic Fields)

Autoren:

Abstract:
We report the results of the Knight shift by 63,65Cu-NMR measurements on single-layered copper-oxide Bi2Sr2-xLaxCuO6+δ conducted under very high magnetic fields up to 44 T. The magnetic field suppresses superconductivity completely, and the pseudogap ground state is revealed. The 63Cu-NMR Knight shift shows that there remains a finite density of states at the Fermi level in the zero-temperature limit, which indicates that the pseudogap ground state is a metallic state with a finite volume of Fermi surface. The residual density of states in the pseudogap ground state decreases with decreasing doping (increasing x) but remains quite large even at the vicinity of the magnetically ordered phase of x≥0.8, which suggests that the density of states plunges to zero upon approaching the Mott insulating phase.
